Taskforce Team Profile - Barry Johnston

Meet Barry Johnston, a seasoned plumber with over two decades of experience in his field. Last September, Barry joined Taskforce, drawn in by the culture and the people. In this interview, Barry shares insights into his career trajectory, his most memorable experiences on the job, and offers valuable advice for newcomers entering the trade.

Q) How long have you been in your trade for?

A)  I started my apprenticeship when I was 25 years old, so I’ve been in the trade now for over 20 years.

Q) When did you join Taskforce?

A)  Last year in September I met Matthew and Jason and  joined the team at Taskforce.

Q) What do you like best about being part of Taskforce?

A)  All of the people in the field and the Office are amazing. Knowledge that the work that we do ensures people’s safety makes it very rewarding.

Q) Tell us about your most memorable / funniest call out.

A)  I do remember one job where the electrician thought the couple at the place we were at were having a romantic shower while we did the inspection. I had to laugh. The tenant had told me when we turned up that they hadn’t had hot water working for some days and the sounds my electrician friend was hearing were just the sounds of a fully grown man entering an icy cold shower .

Q) What is your top tip for someone just starting out in a trade?

A) Hard work never killed anyone. Always make sure safety is your number one priority. There’s no do-overs so better safe than sorry.

Q) What’s your favourite coffee spot in your hood?

A)  Good boy Billy on the corner of Springvale and Burwood HWY Vermont sth

Q) What’s your current favourite tune on your playlist?

A) I’ve been listening to a lot of Rüfüs Du Sol recently. I‘ve always loved their song ‘Innerbloom’ and it’s back in the high rotation at the moment.

Q) If you were to hold a Bunnings sausage sizzle what cause would you be raising money for?

A) Having children that deal with the struggles of autism my sausage sizzle charity would be the autism research institute. Their website is: https://autism.org/
