What you need to know about rental minimum standards

All landlords and property agents must adhere to 14 categories of minimum standards for rental properties on or before the day the renter moves in, as introduced by the Victorian government in March 2021.
The government has announced new measures to crack down on these standards, with the creation of a dedicated taskforce armed with a range of penalties that can be applied to both owners and property managers.
Failure to meet the standards is a criminal offence, with maximum fines of up to $57,000 if the property is owned by a company and $11,000 for individual owners. In addition, property managers risk being named and shamed on a new Rental Non-compliance Register maintained by Consumer Affairs Victoria.
