Plungers can usually unclog toilet clogs because they are not too far down the drain. If the object causing the clog is lodged in the siphon, a flange plunger can be used to remove it. To avoid splashing and to get a lot of suction, make sure to get a good-sized plunger.

Water leaks in your toilet can be caused by a variety of factors. A flapper that is not firmly seated in the valve seat is the most common cause. A cracked valve seat or a failed gasket could also be to blame. The leak should stop if you tighten the flapper or replace the failed gasket. If the leak is coming from the overflow tube, double-check that the valve is securely fastened. When water overflows from the tank, it usually means the valve isn't tight enough to prevent more water from entering once the tank is full.

If your toilet flushes slowly, mineral deposits may have clogged the rinse holes under the rim. You can clean out those clogged holes with a mirror and a coat hanger without ever getting your hands dirty. Examine the holes in the mirror to see if they are clogged. If they are, bend a coat hanger flat and poke any mineral deposits out with the tip into the holes.
