There are lots different plumbing issues that can spring up in average household. Some plumbers issues are more popular than others. Some of most popular plumbers issues are also quite easy to repair. Doing repairs for these popular plumbers issues yourself can save you hundreds of dollars.

1. Low Water Pressure

When someone complains about having low water pressure it is usually at basin tap. first thing to check is when low water pressure is affecting both hot and cold water. When both hot and cold have low pressure most likely cause is aerator. Deposits of calcium build up slowly in tap aerator and reduce water pressure. A blocked aerator is easy to repair. To clean a tap aerator carefully remove it, clean matter and build up on it and put it back in.

2. Slow Draining Basin

A basin that is draining slowly is a very popular plumbers problem. Occasionally pop-up that is used to stop up basin can collect lots of hair and matter over time. To get drain flowing smoothly again matter needs to removed. One way to do this is to use Zip it tool, a handy plumbers tool, to clean drain. Another option is to remove pop-up and clean out. Most pop-ups are held in place with a nut attached to drain just under basin which can be unscrewed by hand or with pliers. Once nut is completely taken off pop-up can be cleaned and then reinstalled.

3. Slow Draining Bath

A slow draining Bath is another very popular plumbers problem that can be easily repaired. Occasionally Bath drain is full of hair which slows water down as it drains out of Bath. Again Zip it tool or a pair of pointy nose pliers are effective tools that can be used to reach in and clean out matter in drain. When there is a Bath stopper in drain you may have to remove Bath stopper before getting to hair clog. It is a good idea to clean out matter in Bath drain on a regular basis even when Bath is not draining slowly. When it is left too long it could end up clogging drain completely.

4. Constantly flowing toilet

Another popular plumbers problem that lots people are familiar with is a Constantly flowing toilet. There are various things that can be causing toilet to run but they are easy to repair. first step is to figure out what is cause of Constantly flowing toilet. Once you know which of working parts of toilet is causing problem you can replace it or repair it and stop running water.

5. Jammed Garbage Disposal

A jammed garbage disposal is high on list of popular plumbers issues.  Most of us misplace the key that comes with garbage disposal to help unjam it. Fortunately an Allen wrench can be used to unjam a garbage disposal. At very bottom of disposal there is an opening to insert key. Using a allen wrench simply turn both directions to free motor.

6. Washing Machine Pipes

Washing machine pipes are possibly most damaging maintenance items in a household.

  •                     Rubber pipes deteriorate.
  •                     Not turning off the taps after each washing cycle use can result in major water damage when a hose ruptures.
  •                     Pipes are subject to high pressures in washing process.
  •                     Reinforced pipes only cost a few dollars more – a small price to pay for peace of mind.
  •                     Change or place the pipes at first sign of deterioration.
  •                     Place a water alarm which can warn you are first sign of a water leak.

7. When a Gas Water Heater Fails to Heat Water…

Start by performing these diagnostics:

i) Be sure gas is turned on. Turn gas control knob to PILOT to avoid burner from igniting when you are looking inside. Remove metal cover at bottom of water heater and look to see when burner and/or pilot light – small flame at end of pilot gas supply Ba– are lit.

ii) When pilot light has gone out, follow instructions on tank to relight it. It’s also possible that gas inlet valve has been closed partially or all way. When so, turn handle parallel to line and relight pilot light. When pilot won’t light, thermocouple may be defective – either call your gas utility (a free service in lots areas) or Taskforce specialists. (Newer water heaters may have a glow plug or spark ignitor instead of a pilot – follow instructions in your owner’s manual.)

iii) When burner is not on, replace cover and make sure thermostat is set to about 120 degrees Fahrenheit. When it isn’t, adjust it, turn on a hot water tap, and then wait a few minutes to see when water heater burner ignites. When it doesn’t ignite, leave hot water running and try lowering and then raising temperature setting on dial until burner ignites.

When burner ignites, replace cover and turn thermostat back to an appropriate setting. When burner doesn’t go on, have water heater checked out by an appliance repair person. It could be that heater’s thermostat is defective. Replacement is best left to Taskforce specialists

8.  Smell for Gas

When you smell a garlic-like scent, turn gas valve control to OFF (you may have to push down as you turn it). Wait until gas smell has dissipated before relighting pilot light. When gas smell is strong and doesn’t dissipate, quickly turn off gas supply valve, ventilate area, and call your utility company from a remote phone.
