Roller Paint Tips and Techniques

Interior painting is a potentially exciting project, and with excitement comes the challenges especially if you’re not an experienced painter. If you are decided to use this weekend for this project, learn some tricks and techniques to make the best out of your time, money and energy.

Be Finicky with the Paint Roller

Having the right tools is the crucial for an excellent outcome. Start by choosing a premium-quality brush with the appropriate roller length.

You can find roller naps made of natural and synthetic chemicals. All of them are available in different lengths. Each length is suitable for specific types of surfaces. Just bear in mind that longer naps can hold more paint.

For smooth surfaces, Melbourne house painters recommend a nap that is ¼ inch long. These surfaces include wooden doors, ceilings, trims and newly-built walls. For medium-rough planes, a ½ inch nap and ¾ inch for textured plaster or rough surfaces. For all purposes, a ½-inch nap is the best option.

Get Rid of Lint

Lint is a usual suspect in spoiling a paint job. Make sure to remove it from the roller using a vacuum or a painter’s tape.

Use a Single Pattern

Using the right pattern will make things fast and easy, and usually paves way to a pleasant result. Most home painters Melbourne follow an “N” or  “W” pattern because it allows them to cover a wide area in a short period of time. Find the wet edges and work along them while moving closer to the trim to avoid leaving brush streaks around the perimeter.

Use Moderate Pressure

It is advised to practice painting on something that has a similar type of surface so you can get used to it and calculate the amount of pressure that you need to maintain. Excessive pressure can cause bead formation and insufficient pressure will exhaust your arm. Melbourne home painters use this trick: lift the roller away from the surface after each stroke to avoid distinct lines

Focus on Small Sections

Yes, we all want to finish fast. But focusing on small sections will enhance the quality of the outcome. Also, this practice is less likely to be draining. Make sure the roller is always moist for a flawless stroke.

Learn the Correct Way to Hold a Roller

There is a “correct” way to hold a proper. Let the dominant hand hold it while you’re standing with your feet slightly part.  Hold the roller in front of so have better control of the tool.

If you need to use an extension pole, position the dominant hand at the bottom of the pole and another on the middle for better leverage.
