Ducts are needed to allow warm air from the furnace to circulate in your living space. Your home has two types of ductwork: the supply duct which brings in the fresh air and a return duct which draws air so it can be processed by the HVAC system. Both are even needed to achieve comfort. So once you start to hear banging noises, get to the problem right away.

  1. Expansion or Contraction Changes in temperature can cause the ducts to expand and contract. When warm air has been moving through the ducts before you turn off the system, the duct may contract and cause a banging noise.
  2. Secure the Dampers Loose dampers can also create noises. A damper is a plate or valve that regulates air flow within a duct. Check the damper of the supply duct. If it is closed, the banging noise may be coming from air trying to enter get out of the supply duct. Open the damper and then see if anything has changed. If the banging noise is not there anymore, it would be safe to assume that the problem was just with the closed damper.
  3. Attach a New Filter Noise can be created by debris hitting the filter inside your ducts. Reduce it by adding a non-pleated filter. Secure the new filter using metal braces.
  4. Fine-tune the Actuator Within the dampers is a device called the “actuator”. Try to move it up or down until the banging goes away. If you are not confident about doing it on your own, contact a local HVAC technician Sydney.
  5. Clean the Fans Fans are installed within the ductwork to facilitate air movement. Clean the fans to eliminate debris that could be banging against the walls of the ducts.
  6. Insulate Insulation doesn’t only improve heating and cooling efficiency, it also abates the noise produced by the HVAC system.
