Properly functioning smoke detectors can give you peace of mind. In fact these simple devices have saved millions of lives already. For them to function effectively, correct installation should be observed. Thankfully, these are fairly easy to install.

Before mounting the smoke detectors, determine the most suitable places for the smoke detectors. You have a large home, you will need more. Mount the detectors on ceilings because smoke goes up. If you are going fix it on a wall make sure it is not more than 10 inches from the ceiling. For vaulted ceilings, mount the alarm close to the highest point of the ceiling.

If you have a basement stairway with a door at the top of the stairs, mount the smoke detector at the bottom of the stairway, since dead air at the top of the stairway could prevent smoke from being detected by an alarm at the top of the stairs. It is advised to install at least one smoke detector on every floor.

Do not mount the smoke detectors near anything that has constant draft such as the furnace, air conditioner register and windows. Steam can trigger the alarm so don’t put one near the cooking area or in the bathroom.

Buy smoke detectors from a reliable manufacturer. You can find lots of options in home improvement stores.

Buy enough 9-volt batteries to power these devices. Remember to replace the batteries periodically. It is advised to do it every 6 months.

Test the detectors before installing them. Insert the batteries and push the test alarm button.

Strictly abide to the manufacturer's instructions for smoke detectors installation.

Once these are installed, run another test by pushing the button.
