Taken aback by this month’s electricity bill? There are numerous ways to trim energy use, and one of these is by adjusting water heater temperature. A small change in the temperature can result to a quite a bit of savings. The water heater is almost everybody’s daily unsung hero, but making slight adjustments to its setting won’t hurt its purpose. This is how to do it.

The best approach is to hire a professional electrician to do it. While adjusting the water heater temperature isn’t a particularly complex task, it’s still better to allow somebody who is experienced with electrical stuff. The electrician can detect issues which are not noticeable to inexperienced individuals. But if you believe you’re up for the task, follow these steps:

Shut the power supply. Putting a stop to the flow of electricity is the first thing that should be done in any electrical-related task. Locate the circuit breaker box (usually it’s in the laundry room, or basement), then turn it off. Once you switch it off, it is now safe to work on the heater.

Take off the faceplate. Search for a plate on the side of the water heater. This is usually has a width of approximately 7 inches and a height of 10 inches. Remove the screws that secure the plate, and keep these in a container.

Below the faceplate is a small dial. On it are buttons which allow users to modify the settings of the heater. Usually, you’ll find buttons with “warm”, “medium” and “hot” written on them. Sometimes, temperatures are displayed, which you can adjust per degree Fahrenheit. Set the heater on your desired temperature but you may not want to go lower than 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

After adjusting the temperature of the water heater, put the faceplate back to its original position. Put the screws that hold the plate back in place.

After everything is back on its proper place, go to the circuit breaker box and restore the power supply. Let the water heater run for 20 minutes before checking the water’s temperature. If you’re not contented with the result, simply repeat the process until you’re satisfied.
