If you are fond of wood projects, knowing the different types of wood joints can particularly helpful for your next endeavor.  Below are the types of wood joints, their descriptions:

Basic Butt

Perhaps considered as the most basic of all joint, the basic butt has one piece of wood pushed up against another, normally at a square angle. This type of joint is commonly seen in the framing of walls.

Mitered Butt

This type of joint is tremendously analogous to the basic butt, apart from with a small twist. Instead of two boards meeting to form a square angle, the bottom of each board is trimmed at reciprocating angles to create a 90 degree angle.

Half-lap

You can remove part of both boards in a half-lap joint. Usually, you can take out small notch on each board that goes through it. When these pieces of wood are combined, you will have a remarkably strong joint, but some wood are flimsier.

Tongue and groove

This type of joint is used in joining square boards along a single long edge. You can create a small lip or tongue alongside the rim of one of the boards, and a congruently deep trench along the middle of the other board.

Mortise and Tendon

This type of joint is common in furniture making. You may describe this as something like peg and hole method. Essentially, you are making a peg out of one piece of wood, and a corresponding hole in the other section of wood. The hole is called the mortise and the peg is called the tendon.

Biscuit

Biscuit joints are similar to tongue and groove method. Create slots in both sections of wood that you want to join, and then join them using wafer that is from a different type of wood. This type of joint is commonly used when making table and desk tops.
