Building something with your own hands can give you a sense of accomplishment. Whether it’s a small table or a dog house, it is something to be cherished. But before anything else, take a look at this beginner’s guide for selecting wood for carpentry projects.

What Are You Making? The most important thing to determine is what you are making because this will have a huge impact to your decision on which type of wood and which variety to use. If it’s just something small like a bird feeder, you don’t something weighty. But if it’s something that is going to hold up a lot of weight, you have get a sturdy material.

You should also take note that wood contracts and expands as a response to temperature variation. Factor in where you plan to place the project after completion.

How Long Do You Want It Last? The length of time you intend to use the project should be taken into account when choosing the material. You’re probably find with a dog house that is going to last for a few years, but you definitely want the treehouse to last for more than a decade.

What Colour Do You Prefer? A dim room can brighten by a light-coloured wood. If you want to install an elegant or intimate atmosphere, choose a darker material.

Hardwood or Softwood? Choosing between a hardwood and a softwood is fairly easy. You just have to decide what you’re exactly making. Softwood is harvested from needled-trees, and are more flexible than hardwood. Consider this type if you’re planning on building a sled or skate ramp because they can be bended easily.

Hardwood is harvested from trees with leaves like maples and oaks. The wood of these trees are resilient, which make them ideal for planks. They are also great material for carving. If you want a project that will last for decades, use hardwood.
